Meet Kevin
Full-time private maths tutor for 14 years. Before that, an accountant and then an actuary — and before that, a mathematician. This page is the longer version of how that happened.
How I got here
I got 11 A grades at GCSE — this was back before A* existed — then 4 As at A-Level in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and won both of my school's mathematics prizes. I went on to read Mathematics at university.
After uni I worked as an accountant and then as an actuary. Good careers, both of them, but what I actually enjoyed was the bit where I explained something complicated to someone and watched it click. So in 2012 I became a full-time maths tutor, and I've never looked back.
Fourteen years of doing one thing
I've been tutoring maths full time since 2012 — the first seven years travelling house to house, and every year since 2019 entirely online. That's well over 10,000 hours now, and hundreds of students, one to one.
Because I teach the GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level syllabuses several times over every single year, I know every corner of them — and I know the individual requirements and question styles of all the main exam boards: Edexcel, AQA, OCR, OCR-MEI and Cambridge. A school teacher might teach a syllabus through once a year. I go through each of them many times, with students at every level, every year.
There's a side benefit to tutoring this long that people don't think of: my students have come from a huge range of schools, so I've seen the teaching techniques of many of the best in-school maths teachers in the country, through their students' books and methods. Over the years I've adapted the best of what I've seen into my own teaching — a collection of the clearest ways to explain each bit of the syllabus, built up over hundreds of students.
What I'm actually good at
Breaking things down. Taking something that looks complicated, working out which building block underneath it is missing, and explaining it in a way that makes sense to that particular student — because the same topic goes wrong for different students for completely different reasons.
I'm patient, and I listen. A lot of tutoring is understanding how someone else is thinking about a problem — where their picture of it differs from the right one — and you can't do that by talking at them. After this many students, I've got a fair idea of the different ways people get stuck, and I've got a clean method and good practice material ready for nearly all of them.

I teach each syllabus several times over every year, at every level — so nothing on any paper surprises me, and I know exactly what each exam board wants.

A plan, not just lessons
Every student gets a structure — what to cover, when, which papers to use and in what order. The resources I use are free on this site, arranged the way I actually teach them.
